East Frisian Idyll on the Dyke

A warm welcome to our beautifully restored Gulf farmhouse in a uniquely secluded setting, right on the North Sea dyke and close to the small coastal village of Bensersiel.

Our apartments in the former living quarters impress with high ceilings, thick beams and large wooden lattice windows offering wonderful views across the wide East Frisian landscape. The apartments in the former barn wing convince with spacious, modern layouts. The modern furnishings, designed with great attention to detail, make our apartments a place to feel completely at home.

Having fallen into ruin over the years, this little gem was awakened from its long slumber in 2016. During the restoration of the more than 210-year-old building, great care was taken to preserve the old structure and to retain its characterful details.

The new lattice windows and doors were modelled on their 200-year-old originals. The façade was painstakingly cleaned, the joints cut out and repointed with historically accurate shell lime.

Solid wood floorboards, modern furnishings, hand-picked details and paintings by the Esens artist Käthe Janssen round off the charm of the apartment.

South-west-facing terraces offer an unobstructed view of the adjoining bird sanctuary and nature reserve. Garden furniture, a parasol and a barbecue are ready for you to use.

A unique location, right on the dyke

The farmhouse lies in the midst of a bird sanctuary and nature reserve, about one kilometre from the coastal village of Bensersiel. The main dyke runs right in front of the property, offering views across the Wadden Sea and out to the East Frisian Islands.

The history of the farmhouse

After the last tenant left the Gulf farmhouse in 2011, it fell into ruin at an alarming pace. In July 2015, after the building had already collapsed in many places, restoration work was finally able to begin.
